What Type of Witch Are You? 30+ Types of Witches Explained

Different Types of Witches

Witchcraft isn’t one-size-fits-all.

From Green Witches who work with herbs and nature, to Cosmic Witches who harness the energy of the stars, to City and Techno Witches thriving in urban jungles, there’s a magical path for everyone.

Some follow centuries-old traditions, others carve their own eclectic paths, and some focus purely on intention and energy.

So, what type of witch are you?

If you're just starting out with witchcraft and you're still learning about the different types of witches and the many different paths you could walk, I highly recommend reading The Path of the Witch and The Complete Grimoire by Lidia Pradas!

I have both these books on my bookshelf, and I believe they’re essential reading, not because they’re in-depth guides to the craft, but purely because they’re so easily accessible and a joy to read! There’s nothing heavy or difficult to understand about these books.

They’re a perfect introduction to witchcraft, with easily digestible info and gorgeous illustrations to keep you engaged.

But if you’re impatient and want to learn more about the different types of witches right away, then you’re in the right place.

In this guide, we’ll explore the many types of witches to help you discover the magical path that resonates with you.

There are Many Different Types of Witches

Different types of witches

Breaking things down into categories can be really clarifying—especially in a field like witchcraft, which is so vast, diverse, and eclectic.

Labels and classifications aren’t “rules,” but they can be excellent tools for learning, self-discovery, and community connection. Like myself, many modern witches use them as a way to:

  • Organize practices (e.g., distinguishing someone who primarily works with herbs vs. someone who does divination or spirit work).
  • Explore identity (finding resonance with a path like “kitchen witch” or “cosmic witch” can be affirming).
  • Communicate easily (if you say you’re a “green witch,” others instantly understand your focus is on plants and nature).
  • Learn systematically (categorization helps highlight overlaps, distinctions, and the breadth of traditions).
However, it’s worth noting that some folks in the witchcraft community push back against labels, arguing that witchcraft should be fluid and personal, or that labels can be restrictive or even gatekeeping.

Personally, I don’t buy into the idea that there’s any “one right way” here. If having a mega-list of the different witch types helps you map the terrain and refine your own craft, that’s a very witchy thing in itself—knowledge and naming are powerful.

So that’s why I’ve done just that, and put together this master list of the different types of witches.

I’m using these labels not to limit anyone, but to explore possibilities and share just how diverse the witchcraft world can be.

Eclectic Witch

What is an Eclectic Witch and How Do You Become One

An Eclectic Witch is someone who creates a deeply personal, intuitive form of witchcraft by weaving together elements from a wide array of magical traditions.

One day, they might borrow a bit of herbal magic, the next, they’re drawing from tarot, lunar rituals, folklore, or even shamanic energy work. There’s no one “official” path they’re tied to; they simply follow what feels right.

It’s like building your very own magical playlist, picking spells, tools, and rituals that vibe with you, blending them into a unique practice that’s totally you. No rules, no rigid structure; just intuition, heart, and creativity lighting the way.

Kitchen Witch

A Kitchen Witch is someone who turns cooking into a kind of everyday magic—infusing meals with intention, love, and the energies of ingredients rather than performing formal rituals.

Think stirring herbs into a soup not just for flavor, but for warmth and protection; choosing spices because they carry meanings like prosperity (hello, cinnamon!) or healing (gentle garlic!).

The charm of the Kitchen Witch's path is that magic happens through your hands in the kitchen; meals become little spells, your wooden spoon is like a wand, and every simmering pot carries purpose.

It’s about making nourishment both tasty and meaningful by weaving simple intention into the act of feeding yourself and others.

Green Witch

Green Witchcraft Sub-types

A Green Witch is an earth-rooted archetype—a magical steward of nature whose practice flows with the rhythms of the living world.

The Green Witch draws her power from plants, herbs, trees, and the cycles of the seasons, working openly with the spirit of the land, tending gardens, and crafting rituals that honor the natural world.

Because this path is so deeply grounded in ecology and earth-based wisdom, it serves wonderfully as an umbrella under which you can “stack” sub-types. Under the Green Witch banner, all these specialized practices share a common root: a profound reverence for nature and its living magic.

Herbal Witch

Herbal witch title image

A Herbal Witch is a Green Witch who brings the magic of herbs and plants right into their hands by cultivating, harvesting, and crafting with intention.

This path is all about really knowing your plants; their lore, medicinal benefits, and magical meanings, and using that knowledge to brew teas, tinctures, charms, and rituals for healing, protection, and energy.

It’s a deeply grounded practice that unites herbalism with spirituality, honoring the living wisdom of each leaf, root, and blossom to nurture both body and spirit.

Forest Witch

A Forest Witch is someone who practices magic by connecting deeply with the energies of the forest, working with its plants, animals, spirits, and natural forces to heal, protect, and harness its untamed power. Forest witchcraft is deeply connected to the things humans have historically revered, feared, or depended on for survival.

By embracing the path of the Forest Witch, you’re reclaiming that space, not as something to fear, but as something to understand and work with. Instead of resisting the shadows, you learn from them. Instead of seeing the unknown as threatening, you step into it willingly and listen.

Fauna Witch

A Fauna Witch, also known as an Animal Witch (and sometimes even Critter Witch), is someone who practices earth-based magic with a deep focus on animals, both physical and spiritual. They work with animal energies, signs, and symbolism, often forming relationships with spirit animals or guides.

Instead of controlling nature, Fauna Witches observe, protect, and honor it, especially the creatures that inhabit it. Their magic is rooted in respect, quiet connection, and a desire to live in harmony with the wild.

Whether through ritual, intuition, or everyday care, a Fauna Witch walks gently alongside the animal world, not above it.

Hedge Witch

Title image - hedge witch

A Hedge Witch is a solitary, intuitive practitioner who blends nature-based magic, herbalism, and spirit work to create a personal, unstructured magical path.

Their practice is rooted in working with nature, herbs, and spirits, but they are also known for their ability to “cross the hedge,” a term referring to journeying between the physical and spiritual realms.

While Green Witches focus mostly on nature and earth-based practices in all forms, Hedge Witches also emphasize spirit work and trance states.

Crystal Witch

A crystal witch standing in a circle of crystals

A Crystal Witch is someone who focuses primarily on working with the energies of crystals and gemstones. While many other types of witches may incorporate crystals into their spells or rituals, a Crystal Witch makes crystal work a core part of their practice, using stones to enhance magic, healing, and meditation.

Each crystal is chosen for its unique properties to influence energy and intention, and they are often integrated into daily life to support spiritual growth and magical workings.

Elemental Witch

An Elemental Witch is someone who practices magic by connecting with the energies of the five classical elements: Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit. These elements serve as the foundation of their craft, each representing different aspects of nature and the self.

For instance, Earth embodies stability and growth, Air symbolizes intellect and communication, Fire represents transformation and passion, Water is linked to emotion and intuition, and Spirit connects all elements, acting as the ethereal force that unites them.

Elemental witches often incorporate these elements into their rituals, spells, and daily practices to achieve balance and harmony.

While some may choose to work with all five elements, others might specialize in one, such as becoming a Fire Witch or Water Witch, focusing their energy and practices on that particular element.

Earth Witch

An Earth Witch is someone whose practice is grounded in the energy of the earth itself—working with soil, stones, crystals, plants, and the cycles of nature. Their magic is steady and rooted, often centered on growth, grounding, and connection to the land.

You could think of an Earth Witch as a branch of the Green Witch archetype, since they share that deep love of nature. Still, they’re obviously also a kind of Elemental Witch, focusing specifically on the earth element and its stabilizing, nurturing power.

Whether through gardening, crystal work, or rituals tied to the turning of the seasons, an Earth Witch draws strength from the ground beneath their feet.

Fire Witch

What is a Fire Witch

A Fire Witch is someone who channels the dynamic energy of fire, including its warmth, passion, and transformative power, into their magical practice. This path is deeply rooted in the elemental force of fire, embracing both its creative and destructive aspects.

Fire witches often work with practices like candle magic, fire scrying, and cord-cutting rituals, using flames to manifest change, empower themselves, and transform their lives.

Their magic is active and energetic, focusing on personal growth, purification, and letting go of what no longer serves them.

In essence, a Fire Witch harnesses the elemental energy of fire to bring about transformation and empowerment in their life.

Air Witch

An Air Witch is someone who works with the energy of wind, breath, intellect, and communication. Air is the element of ideas, knowledge, inspiration, and movement—both physical and spiritual.

If you’re drawn to Air, your magic might lean toward concepts found within Cosmic Witchcraft, such as working with celestial beings, or even Hedge Witchcraft, like “flying the hedge” into the ethereal realm.

Air Witches often feel at home in open spaces, high places, or anywhere the breeze moves freely. They may also be drawn to incense, feathers, bells, and symbols like birds, clouds, or the compass rose.

Water Witch

A Water Witch is someone who practices magic by connecting deeply with the energies of water, be it rivers, lakes, oceans, or even the body’s own fluids. This path is all about working with the flow, adaptability, and cleansing properties of water to enhance one’s magical practice.

Water Witches often incorporate elements like water scrying, weather work, and the use of water in spells for healing, intuition, and emotional balance.

While all Water Witches share this foundational connection to water, there are different types within this archetype, each focusing on specific aspects or bodies of water.

Sea Witch

Watercolor and pen illustration of a Sea Witch Portrait

A Sea Witch is someone who works with the energy of the ocean, kind of like a Green Witch works with the power of nature and earth. The ocean is where they pull their power from, using tides, lunar cycles, and marine elements to help with transformation, healing, and boosting intuition.

They might work with shells, salt, or ocean herbs, honor water spirits, and follow the rhythm of the waves in their magic.

While all Water Witches connect with water in some form, a Sea Witch focuses specifically on the sea and its energies. Whether they live by the shore or far inland, they tap into the ocean’s endless power to deepen their magic and spiritual practice.

River Witch

What is a River Witch

A River Witch is someone who practices magic by connecting deeply with the energies of fresh, flowing water like rivers, streams, and springs. Unlike a general Water Witch, who works with all forms of water, a River Witch focuses specifically on the dynamic, ever-moving aspects of freshwater.

This path is all about flow, change, and transformation. River Witches often use moving water in spells to encourage progress, release negativity, or draw in new energy.

It is a practice rooted in the rhythms of the land and water, honoring the river as a living, sentient force that guides and supports personal growth and transformation.

Swamp Witch

Watercolor illustration of a Swamp Witch

A Swamp Witch is someone who practices magic by connecting deeply with the energies of wetlands, those mysterious spaces where land, water, life, and decay meet.

This path is all about embracing the wild and untamed aspects of nature, focusing on transformation, intuition, and shadow work. Swamp Witches often work with plants like moss, willow, and fungi, and they may scry with murky waters or honor ancestral spirits.

As a type of Water Witch, they draw on the energy of water in its slow, mysterious forms, using the rhythms of decay and renewal to shape their magic.

Whether living near a swamp or simply feeling its pull, they embrace the swamp’s essence and use its energy to guide their craft.

Storm Witch

Beginner Witchcraft: Exploring the Storm Witch Aesthetic

A Storm Witch is someone who works with the energy of storms, combining the power of wind and water. This path focuses on transformation, emotional energy, and harnessing nature’s raw forces. Storm Witches might use rainwater in spells for cleansing, channel lightning for sudden insight, or work with wind to carry intentions.

As a type of Water Witch, they draw on water’s power, but their craft often involves air magic as well. This practice honors storms as living forces that guide and support personal growth and transformation.

Cosmic Witch

A Cosmic Witch is someone who taps into the magic of the stars, planets, and all things celestial, working with astrology, lunar phases, planetary alignments, and cosmic rhythms to power their magic.

Many types of witches can fall under the “cosmic” umbrella; it’s a broad, celestial-focused path that includes various sub-categories, like Astrology Witches or Celestial Witches (like Lunar and Solar).

In short, Cosmic Witchcraft is about weaving the vast wisdom of the universe into your spells and spiritual practice.

Astrology Witch

An Astrology Witch is a specialized type of Cosmic Witch whose magic revolves around astrology. They deeply study birth charts, planetary energies, transits, and electional timing to align their spells and rituals with the stars.

Their practice weaves zodiac correspondences, planetary days, and planetary hours into their magic; living, breathing, and dreaming everything astrology.

Psychic Witch

What is a Psychic WItch

A Psychic Witch is a type of Cosmic Witch who works with the power of the mind, showing that magic starts with intention. For them, spells don’t require elaborate tools; just focus, visualization, and breath.

It’s about shaping energy through willpower and intuition, whether that’s making a wish that manifests or sensing something before it happens. Psychic Witchcraft reminds us that cosmic magic isn’t just out in the stars; it also lives within us.

Celestial Witch

watercolor Celestial Witch

A Celestial Witch is a type of Cosmic Witch who focuses on the energies of celestial bodies, particularly the Sun, Moon, and planets. Their practice revolves around astrology, lunar cycles, and solar events like solstices and equinoxes.

They align their rituals and spells with planetary movements and lunar phases, using these cosmic rhythms to manifest intentions and deepen their spiritual connection. Unlike broader cosmic practices, Celestial Witches concentrate specifically on the direct influences of celestial bodies on Earth.

Lunar Witch

A Lunar Witch aligns their magic with the cycles of the Moon, using each phase for intentions, manifestation, and release. They often work with lunar deities like Artemis, Selene, and Hecate, and use herbs such as mugwort and moonflower to enhance their spells.

While part of the broader Cosmic Witchcraft, Lunar Witchcraft focuses specifically on the Moon’s influence for intuition, healing, and transformation.

Solar Witch

A Solar Witch is someone who aligns their magical practice with the energy and symbolism of the Sun. They harness solar power to fuel their intentions, focusing on themes like vitality, confidence, and personal growth.

Solar Witches often incorporate rituals during solar events such as solstices and equinoxes, using these times to amplify their spells and connect with the Sun’s transformative energy. Their practice may include creating sun-infused waters, performing solar meditations, and honoring solar deities.

Hearth Witch

A Hearth Witch infuses everyday domestic tasks with magic, turning the home into a sacred space. They create a nurturing environment through rituals like lighting candles, brewing herbal teas, and using spices and herbs with intention.

Rooted in historical traditions where women were the heart of the home, hearth witchcraft honors domestic arts as acts of magic. Today, it’s about transforming mundane chores into meaningful rituals that promote warmth, healing, and protection.

Ceremonial Witch

A Ceremonial Witch practices structured, ritual-focused magic rooted in centuries-old traditions.

They may be influenced by occultists like Aleister Crowley and Dion Fortune, performing carefully crafted ceremonies to invoke energies, deities, or spirits for healing, divination, and spiritual transformation.

Using tools like wands, athames, and chalices, these types of witches follow precise steps to ensure focus and intention. Beyond ritual, ceremonial witchcraft is a path of self-discovery and empowerment.

Solitary Witch

A Solitary Witch practices witchcraft independently, without a coven. This path allows for a personal, flexible approach, letting practitioners tailor rituals, spells, and spiritual practices to their beliefs and lifestyle.

These types of witches often draw from various traditions, creating an eclectic practice that fosters a deep connection to themselves and the natural world.

Coven-Based Witch

Title image - Coven Based witch

A Coven-Based Witch practices witchcraft within a group, focusing on shared rituals, mutual support, and collective energy. Unlike specific magical paths like elemental or hearth magic, this approach emphasizes community and tradition.

Modern covens prioritize inclusivity, equality, and personal growth, offering a space for members to exchange knowledge and amplify their magical work together. This collaborative environment fosters a sense of belonging and enhances the practitioner’s spiritual journey.

Hereditary Witch

Could You be a Hereditary Witch

A Hereditary Witch inherits their magical knowledge and practices through family lineage rather than formal study. Passed down through generations, these teachings preserve unique customs and rituals, maintaining continuity within families.

While sometimes seen as a birthright, it’s more about inheriting guidance and tradition.

This practice has roots in ancient civilizations, emphasizing the preservation of magical knowledge across generations.

Sex Witch

Watercolor and pen illustration of a Sex Witch

A Sex Witch views sexuality as sacred, using sexual energy, arousal, orgasm, and eroticism as a tool in their magical practice. Rooted in ancient traditions, sex magic channels physical, emotional, and spiritual energy for transformation, healing, and connection to the Divine.

This practice embraces feminism, inclusivity, body positivity, and various forms of sensual devotion, focusing on channeling the energy released during sexual experiences toward intention and manifestation.

City Witch

A City Witch finds magic in the rhythms and energy of urban life. These types of witches adapt rituals and spells to the city environment, drawing power from its vibrant chaos, sights, sounds, and emotions.

The living metropolis itself becomes a source of energy, which they can also direct through technology and modern tools to enhance their magical practice.

Techno Witch

A Techno Witch, also called a technopagan or cyber witch, integrates technology into their magical practice, using digital devices as conduits for spellwork and energy.

Unlike City Witches, who draw power from urban life, Techno Witches focus on the electrical energy in computers and accessories, channeling it to enhance rituals. This modern approach embraces contemporary tools and energies as part of evolving witchcraft.

Baby Witch

A Baby Witch is a beginner practitioner of witchcraft, often using the term playfully to indicate their newness to the craft. It’s not an official rank in any tradition but a casual way for novices to signal their stage in the community.

The term gained popularity in online communities like Tumblr and TikTok, where it conveys a sense of belonging and openness to learning. While some embrace it, others may find it dismissive if used by outsiders.

Ultimately, it’s a self-chosen label that reflects one’s journey into witchcraft.

White Witch

What Is a White Witch

A White Witch practices magic with good intent, focusing on healing, protection, and harmony. White Witchcraft is more of a descriptor of benevolent purpose than a specific tradition. It describes ethical practice rather than a particular style.

You can be any type of witch, like a Psychic Witch or a Green Witch, and practice white witchcraft by using your abilities ethically to help and uplift others. The key is aligning your magic with compassion, intention, and the principle of causing no harm.

Gray Witch

A gray witch, both good and evil, with angel wings and devil horns

A Gray Witch practices a balanced approach to magic, integrating both light (constructive) and dark (destructive or protective) elements.

These types of witches do not strictly adhere to “love and light” like Wiccan-influenced white witches, nor do they focus entirely on baneful or malevolent practices like some dark or left-hand path witches.

Instead, gray witches work with both sides of magic, often guided by personal ethics rather than strict religious or moral codes.

This path is more about the witch’s approach to magic, balancing both light and dark, working with both benevolent and baneful spells as needed, and following their own personal ethics rather than external rules.

Unlike Wicca, which follows a structured ethical system, gray witchcraft tends to be more personalized.

Occult Witch

an occult witch illustration holding a candle

An Occult Witch delves into esoteric traditions, integrating practices like alchemy, Hermeticism, and demonology into their craft. These types of witches often study hidden knowledge and ancient systems to deepen their magical work.

While their practices may overlap with other paths, their focus on the occult sciences and arcane wisdom distinguishes them. This path is suited for those drawn to the mysteries of the unseen and the transformative power of secret knowledge.

Wiccan Witch

Title image - Wiccan Witch

Wiccan Witches follow Wicca, a modern pagan religion that emphasizes harmony with nature, the divine, and the cycles of the seasons. They practice rituals, spellwork, and worship that honor the God and Goddess, often guided by ethical principles like the Wiccan Rede: “An it harm none, do what ye will.”

These types of witches follow spiritual devotion with practical magic in a structured tradition.

Secular Witch

A Secular Witch

A Secular Witch practices magic without subscribing to religious or spiritual doctrines. They focus on intention, psychology, and symbolism, viewing magic as a tool for personal empowerment rather than a divine or supernatural force.

Secular Witches often craft their own ethical guidelines, emphasizing personal responsibility over traditional spiritual codes.
