What is a Techno Witch?

What is a Techno Witch

In this age of digital enchantment, the term Techno Witch (sometimes written as Technowitch) might conjure images of a modern fusion of folksy cottagecore and cyberpunky technology as a fashion aesthetic, rather than a type of witchcraft.

And while that’s not entirely off the mark, there’s more nuance to it.

A Techno Witch is a modern-day practitioner who skillfully melds the mystical with the mechanical, creating a unique blend of witchcraft that utilizes technology as a magical tool.

The most important thing to note about techno witchcraft or “technomancy” is that technology is the essential, core element of this type of witchcraft and forms the absolute foundation of a Techno Witch’s practice.

Techno Witches Use Technology for Their Craft

Modern witch surrounded by home technology

All modern witches will very likely use tech in their practice, just as they do in their everyday life.

Lunar witches might use apps to track moon phases, coven based witches might use social media platforms to connect with their coven, and even kitchen witches will rarely cook up a magical recipe without first researching it online, using a conversion calculator, or even scrolling social to get inspiration.

Tech is fused with our daily lives and therefore our craft, no matter what type of Witch we identify as. However, what makes a Techno Witch distinct is that she uses technology as the core aspect of her craft.

Techno Witches use digital tools, apps, coding, and online platforms as vehicles for their magic. This could be casting spells through writing code, creating sigils with graphic design software, or even simply meditating to the sound of white noise.

Just as a Fire Witch uses fire and all of its correspondences as the main fuel for her craft, a Techno Witch uses tech.

When Did Techno Witchcraft Become a Thing?

In the wild world of the mid-1990s, a fascinating subculture known as technopaganism emerged, blending the ancient practices of paganism with the burgeoning digital landscape.

Mark Pesce, a key figure in this movement, exemplified this fusion by creating technologies that transformed the internet into a three-dimensional space, inspired by the mystical and magical.

Technopagans like Pesce believed that cyberspace, much like magical space, was a realm constructed by thoughts and beliefs, where technology could be imbued with sacredness and divine presence.

This movement was not just about using technology; it was about integrating it into the spiritual fabric of life, honoring it as part of the human experience.

Technology as an Extension of Spirituality

A 1995 article in Wired Magazine did a beautiful job of highlighting how technopagans viewed technology as an extension of their spiritual practice, using it to create virtual spaces that echoed the rituals and symbolism of traditional paganism.

This included casting digital circles with computers representing the four elements and conducting rituals that blended the physical and virtual worlds.

Technopagans saw the internet as a new frontier for magical exploration, where the imagination could shape reality in ways that mirrored ancient practices.

This movement also provided a space where gender roles were more fluid, and women could express their spiritual power without conforming to traditional patriarchal structures.

Techno Witchcraft Today

Today, the concept of Techno Witchcraft seems like a logical extension of the many types of witches you can identify as (if labels and identity categories are your kind of thing).

In a world where our screens are as much a part of our daily rituals as our morning coffee, it seems only natural that we might start to learn how to channel our magic through the technology that weaves its way throughout our lives.

This digital landscape allows individuals to cherry-pick spiritual traditions that resonate with them, creating a bespoke spiritual experience that is uniquely personal yet globally connected.

From getting (or performing) tarot readings on TikTok, to using astrology apps, techno witchcraft is as much a type of magic as hedge witchcraft or crystal healing, no matter how much we may want to reject the overwhelming presence of tech in every aspect of our lives.

Techno witchcraft acknowledges that technology itself is magic, simply because we wield it.

Technology Complements The Material Nature of Witchcraft

Tech gadgets and witchcraft tools and materials

Witchcraft is a practice rooted in action, not just belief. It involves tangible objects and tools that are, arguably, essential to performing magic. Imagine trying to be a Crystal Witch without owning a few crystals, or trying to practice green witchcraft without buying plants, herbs, or horticulture tools!

Objects in witchcraft, therefore, are more than passive tools; they’re active participants in the creation of magic. This concept, known as material agency, suggests that objects have their own life force, influencing the practitioner and the world around them.

Witchcraft divination tools

A wand or athame, for example, isn’t just a tool but a vessel for energy and intention. The witch and the object work together in a symbiotic relationship, where each contributes to the magic being created.

The only difference with techno witchcraft is that the tools become digital and the space becomes virtual. So it’s the same principle, but the medium changes.

Techno Witchcraft: The Digital Transformation

Techno magic

In the digital age, witchcraft has expanded beyond physical objects to include technology. Smartphones, tablets, and smart devices are now powerful tools in the practice of magic. Techno Witches use apps, online communities, and digital spellbooks as modern altars, accessing their craft through the virtual world.

The internet becomes a sacred space, and technology provides new ways to engage with witchcraft, providing a place for solitary witches to connect with others and demonstrating how the material world evolves while maintaining its central role in the practice.

The Multifaceted Meaning of Magical Objects

Runes, crystlas and eclectic witchcraft items

In witchcraft, objects carry multiple layers of meaning. A cinnamon stick, for example, might symbolize warmth and prosperity for one witch, remind another of nature’s abundance, or evoke feelings of home and comfort for yet another.

Each witch brings their own interpretation, imbuing objects with personal, cultural, and spiritual significance.

This can, therefore, be applied to digital objects in the exact same way. Digital altars created in Photoshop or Canva, emoji sequences typed out as mantras or spells, even enchanted lines of code imbued with personal significance can become the tools a Techno Witch uses in her daily craft, the exact same way that physical objects would be.

It’s all about perception and intention.

How To Get Started as a Techno Witch

Techno Witchcraft

So now you know what a Techno Witch is, it’s time to learn about what techno witchcraft actually involves.

Techno Witchcraft embraces modern technology as a conduit for magic, using digital tools and electronic devices to enhance traditional practices.

One of the most fascinating aspects of this is charging and binding spells into technological objects, transforming them into vessels of energy and intent.

I like this topic as an introduction to the types of magic you can perform as a Techno Witch because it’s vast enough to have many applications but still easy and user-friendly enough to apply to most people.

Drawing sigils on a touchscreen and typing passwords is something pretty much everyone can do – and even if you’re not a tech-savvy person, you’ve likely got enough knowhow to be able to save a file to a USB drive.

If you’re interested in becoming a Techno Witch, this is where I’d begin.

Charging Objects with Sound Frequencies

Charging is a key practice in witchcraft, imbuing objects with energy before using them in spells or rituals. In Techno Witchcraft, digital sound frequencies—such as binaural beats, Solfeggio tones, or white noise—are used to amplify energy in crystals, talismans, or ritual tools.

  • Binaural Beats: These are audio tones that create specific frequency differences between the left and right ear, influencing brainwave activity. Witches may use theta waves (4-7 Hz) for deep meditation or delta waves (0.5-4 Hz) for dream work and astral projection.
  • Solfeggio Frequencies: Certain frequencies, like 528 Hz (associated with transformation and healing), are believed to resonate with the body’s energy field, making them useful for charging amulets or ritual objects.
  • Practical Use: A witch might place a crystal near a speaker playing a specific frequency to charge it with intention before using it in a spell.

Binding Spells into Digital Objects

Binding a spell means linking magical energy to a physical object to store and activate it when needed. Traditionally, witches bind spells to talismans, charms, or cords—but in Techno Witchcraft, digital devices can serve the same purpose.

  • USB Drives as Spell Vessels: A Techno Witch might write a spell in a document and save it on a USB drive, using symbolic filenames, specific file structures, or coded affirmations. For example, a protection spell could be stored in a file named “guardian.exe” or a prosperity spell in “abundance.txt.” The act of plugging in and opening the file then activates the spell.
  • Smartwatches & Wearable Tech: By setting a smartwatch wallpaper with a sigil or linking a fitness tracker to a daily intention (e.g., “Every step I take increases my confidence”), a witch integrates magic into their routine.
  • Encrypted Spell Files: Encrypting a digital grimoire or spellbook with a personal passphrase imbues the words with secrecy and power, much like traditional bookbinding rituals.

Using Passwords & Keystroke Patterns as Magical Components

Incorporating technology into magic means recognizing the power of repeated actions, symbols, and intent. If you’re set on becoming a Techno Witch, you can try using passwords, keystrokes, and other electronic actions as part of your spells.

  • Passwords as Affirmations: Setting a password like “IAmProtected99” or “WealthFlows2Me” acts as a daily affirmation. Every login reinforces the intention, strengthening the spell over time.
  • Keystroke Patterns as Ritual Gestures: Certain typing sequences, such as “333” or “777,” can be used to symbolize spiritual alignment or luck. A witch might type a secret combination before sending an important email or making a big decision.
  • Touchscreen Sigils: Drawing sigils on a touchscreen before unlocking a phone embeds intention into the daily action, much like tracing a rune or pentacle on paper.

Easy, Everyday Examples of Techno Witchcraft

Now that we’ve explored the concepts of charging and binding, it might be helpful to learn some of the more simple, everyday applications of techno witchcraft.

Let’s take a look at some easy, everyday magic examples of techno witchcraft

1. Digital Sigils & Cyber Spellwork

Instead of drawing sigils on paper, Techno Witches might create them digitally using drawing apps or even coding them into QR codes. Some animate sigils as GIFs to ‘activate’ them, while others program them into websites or apps to spread their energy.

2. AI & Algorithm Magic

Algorithm Magic

Some witches use AI tools to generate symbolic images or divinatory messages, seeing these as a form of techno-divination. Others influence social media algorithms by strategically posting content to amplify intent (e.g., posting affirmations on social media at specific times determined algorithmically).

3. Digital Altars & Online Rituals

Instead of a physical altar, some witches create a digital one—a webpage, Pinterest board, or an organized folder of images and texts that hold magical significance. Virtual covens also gather on platforms like Discord or Zoom for rituals.

4. Hacking Reality with Code Magic

For those skilled in coding, writing scripts that subtly reinforce intentions can be a magical act, like setting up bots to send automated affirmations or using encryption as a form of symbolic protection.

It could also include writing scripts or programs that reinforce an intention. This could be as simple as a script that sends daily affirmations to your email or as complex as an algorithm designed to curate energy-boosting content.

5. Divination with Tech

Divination with tech might raise a few eyebrows in the witchcraft community, but remember that this is all about human interpretation of the findings. With this in mind, tech divination could include using AI tarot readings, digital runes, or astrology apps.

Asking digital assistants (like Siri or ChatGPT) symbolic questions and interpreting responses as divination. You could also use random number generators as a modern form of bibliomancy.

6. Electromagnetic & Sound Magic

Electromagnetic sound magic

Techno Witches sometimes work with sound waves, electromagnetic fields, or radio frequencies as magical tools. White noise apps, EVP (electronic voice phenomena) recordings, or even manipulating light and sound in smart home setups can play a role.

Is Techno Witchcraft for You?

Are You a Techno Witch

Techno Witchcraft may be right for you if you feel drawn to both magic and technology, seeing the digital world as a space for energy, intention, and manifestation.

Ask yourself: Do I naturally integrate technology into my daily life? Am I comfortable blending traditional witchcraft with modern tools like apps? Do I see technology as an extension of my practice rather than a distraction from it?

Consider how you interact with both the physical and digital realms. if you find enchantment in devices, symbols, and cyberspace, this path could be a powerful way to harness and direct your magic.
