Modern Witchcraft is one of the fastest-growing spiritual paths in America, according to NBC. It appears that more and more people are embracing life’s mystical and magical side—so if you’re feeling drawn to the metaphysical, you’re not alone!
Modern Witchcraft serves as a potent antidote to the fast-paced, technology-driven demands of contemporary life. It provides a place of solace and a profound sense of connection, purpose, and spiritual fulfillment.
In a world characterized by disconnection and a relentless pursuit of material success, Witchcraft in its many different forms offers a path to reconnect with the natural world, the cycles of the moon, and the rhythms of life.
While there are many different types of witches, and therefore different types of modern Witchcraft, all of them (with perhaps the exception of hereditary witchcraft, though that’s an entirely different beast) fall under the broad umbrella of being a modern witch. I’ll answer some pertinent questions and explain the main ideals behind modern Witchcraft and what it means in the 21st century.
What Exactly is Modern Witchcraft?

Modern Witchcraft is a rapidly evolving practice that has departed from its traditional roots. It differs significantly from how it was perceived just a century ago in the Western world. But what exactly is modern Witchcraft?
Both the concept and definition of modern Witchcraft is continually changing. One person’s definition of what it means to be a modern witch will almost definitely differ from another’s.
I personally resonate with the way modern Witchcraft was recently described in an issue of Vogue:
“Witchcraft exists in the liminal. Like the archetype of the witch, it is always shapeshifting, neither here nor there, never quite fitting in a box. It’s best defined as an age-old spiritual path rooted in the cycles of the earth and the seasons, in the cycles of the cosmos, and in the cycles of the self. It’s entrenched in personal empowerment and impacted by the culture that each witch is surrounded by. The beauty of magick is that it’s most effective and potent when it’s deeply personal.”
– Gabriela Herstic, Vogue Magazine
Regardless of the definition, it’s important to recognize that modern Witchcraft is a peaceful practice that often incorporates elements from various Pagan and pre-Christian beliefs, and focuses on a reverence for nature and the cosmos.
On this note, it’s also important to note that the term “Witchcraft” is often associated with related terms like Wicca, Paganism, Folk Magic and hedge witchcraft, and neo-Paganism (although there are now negative connotations around some of these terms due to miscategorization and unfounded association with certain fringe groups).
While these terms all fall under the umbrella of ‘alternative’ or metaphysical spiritual beliefs, they each have their own unique practices and doctrines.
Why are More People Turning to Witchcraft?

First, it’s crucial to dispel the misconception that Wicca and Paganism are “Satanic” or “Demonic” in nature. These labels were unjustly applied by some Christians to people from other religions. In reality, Witchcraft, Wicca, and Paganism are deeply rooted in nature worship, elemental magic, rituals and ceremonial magic, and a reverence for the divine.
Modern Witchcraft is gaining popularity for several reasons. Some are drawn to its empowering and self-discovery aspects, as the focus on the individual and solitary practices are appealing to today’s modern sensibilities and the idea of individualism.
But others find solace in connecting with nature and spirituality. Many people turn to Witchcraft to find balance, heal emotional wounds, and manifest their desires.
In a disconnected and chaotic world, modern Witchcraft provides grounding and purpose. It allows individuals to tap into their intuition, harness personal power, and create positive change.
Modern Witchcraft Celebrates Individual Practice
Unlike organized religions, Witchcraft doesn’t have a formal institutional structure. It emphasizes rituals and direct spiritual experiences, and is perfect for solitary practitioners. Those who follow Witchcraft often prefer to call themselves practitioners rather than believers.
One unique aspect of Witchcraft is the freedom it offers, with eclectic witchcraft being one of the most common, overarching types of witches in the modern day.
Practitioners can pick and choose elements from across disciplines, practice alone or as part of a coven, and can choose to incorporate as much or as little faith-based practice into their craft as they like.
Modern Witchcraft is completely personal, with no right or wrong way to practice. Each person is free to follow their own path.
This self-directed approach to Witchcraft is attractive in today’s individualistic society. It allows people to explore spirituality in a way that resonates with them. Whether through meditation, spellcasting, or connecting with nature, modern Witchcraft provides a framework for individuals to explore and express their beliefs.
Is Modern Witchcraft Different from Wicca?
Modern Witchcraft and Wiccan witchcraft may seem similar, but they are actually distinct from each other. It’s important to understand that not all witches are Wiccans, and vice versa.
While Wicca has gained popularity since its arrival in the United States in the 1960s, modern Witchcraft encompasses a broader range of practices and beliefs.

According to recent survey data, there are approximately 800,000 Wiccans in the United States. However, the overall number of witches is estimated to be around 1.5 million.
This increase in numbers, along with the rise of Witchcraft-related content on platforms like TikTok, indicates the continued growth and interest in these practices.
Modern Witches Even Have Different, New Subcategories
You may have heard of more common and well-known types of witches, (like Green Witches, Hearth Witches, or even Sea Witches, for example), you may not be so familiar with newer categories and their monikers.
In the world of modern Witchcraft, new subcategories have emerged, particularly on WitchTok (the Witchcraft category feed on TikTok). You can now find self-styled subclasses like makeup witches, glitter witches, and even coffee witches.

While these new archetypes are nothing if not creative, but they also reflect the evolving nature of Witchcraft in the modern era.
I personally think they’re kind of fun, if not distinct and real types of witches. However, there are actually some new witch archetypes arising for the modern day.
What is a City Witch?

As the name suggests, City Witches draw their power and inspiration from the energy of city life. Just as a Sea Witch aligns herself with the power of the ocean, for example, City Witches tap into the vibrant and kinetic energy of metropolitan areas.
Cities are full of life, emotions, and electrical energy, making them a potent source of power for a city witch.
So, unlike traditional depictions of witches in remote, rustic settings, city witches thrive amidst the concrete jungles, skyscrapers, and vibrant chaos of metropolitan life. They draw inspiration from the city’s energy.

City witches adapt their rituals and spellwork to suit the demands of urban living, finding sacredness in the everyday sights and sounds of the cityscape.
In a world that never sleeps, the city witch finds enchantment in the heart of the metropolis, crafting spells to manifest their desires and promote harmony in the urban chaos.
What is a Techno Witch?

Another emerging type of witch is the Techno Witch, sometimes referred to as a technopagan or Cyber Witch. Similar to city witches, cyber witches incorporate technology into their craft, but if I had to pinpoint a real, tangible difference, I’d say a Techno Witch uses tech as her primary conduit for magic, while a City Witch incorporates all aspects of modern, urban living into her practice, not just technology.
They recognize that computers and their accessories hold energy and can be directed to enhance magical practices. Just as a coder writes instructions to make a program or site function, the cyber witch uses technology to channel and direct energy for their spells and rituals.
In the world of metaphysics, magic is seen as energy with a specific pattern that facilitates its function.
When a spell is cast, the vibrations sent out act as a “signal” of intent. The cyber witch takes this idea further by harnessing the electrical energy of technology as a source of power.
So, while Wicca is a well-established form of Witchcraft, modern Witchcraft can be secular, and encompasses a broader range of practices and beliefs. From city witches who draw energy from urban environments to cyber witches who utilize technology, the world of Witchcraft continues to evolve and adapt to the modern age.
What is a Modern Witch Aesthetic?

A modern witch aesthetic embraces the magic and mystery of contemporary Witchcraft, often with a distinct focus on healing, love, and light.
It blends witchy elements, occult symbols, spiritual practices, and a deep connection with nature.
This is the complete inverse of the traditional, outdated perception of Witchcraft. As Lyndal Roper writes in The Witch in the Western Imagination, the pervasive depiction of witches in art has historically been less than flattering:
“Witches represented a deep existential threat, so profound that those who feared their attacks were convinced that unless witches were eliminated, their very physical and emotional survival was at risk. This sense of utter menace pervades so many of these terrifying images of snake-haired hags”
Nowadays, artistic depictions of modern witchcraft tend to be positive, often characterized by a strong emphasis on aesthetics and beauty. The modern witch is often seen adorned in fashionable attire with accessories that reflect a fusion of contemporary and enchanting symbolism.

These depictions emphasize self-expression, and by doing so, modern witchcraft becomes a celebration of diversity and individuality.
In this art, beauty is not just skin deep; it extends to the inner realms of spiritual exploration and empowerment.
At its core, the modern witch aesthetic is about embracing your inner power and harnessing the energy around you. It’s finding beauty in nature and creating harmony and balance in your life.
Final Thoughts on Modern Witchcraft

Modern Witchcraft emerges as a vibrant and deeply resonant thread in the ever-evolving tapestry of human spirituality.
This contemporary form of mysticism invites us to reconnect with the enchanting forces of the natural world and serves as a testament to the enduring human need for connection, purpose, and spiritual fulfillment.
As we navigate the complex currents of modern life, modern Witchcraft offers a compelling reminder that, in the mystical and the enchanting, we can find purpose and a sense of interconnectedness with the world around us.
While all current styles of Witchcraft could be described as ‘modern’ Witchcraft, the fusion of new and old beliefs means that the craft itself is ever-changing. So, no matter what type of witch you class yourself as, you’re a modern witch, too!
