If you’re wondering what an Astrology Witch is and how astrology fits into witchcraft on the whole, you’re in the right place!
Witches have long looked to the stars for guidance, using celestial energy to time spells, harness planetary influences, and deepen their magical practice.
Whether you’re a seasoned witch or just astrology-curious, keep reading to discover how the cosmos can become a powerful part of your craft!
What Does Astrology Have to Do With Witchcraft?
Astrology and witchcraft can absolutely go hand in hand, but they’re not inherently tied together.
Witchcraft is personal, and each witch crafts their own path; some witches use astrology as a core part of their practice, timing spells with planetary movements, working with astrological correspondences, or using charts for deeper spiritual insight.
For others (such as myself, I won’t lie), astrology plays little to no role in their craft, preferring to focus on more worldly magics like elemental witchcraft or green magic, which don’t necessarily rely on celestial influences.
While astrology can be a powerful tool in witchcraft, it’s not a requirement, and many people study astrology without practicing witchcraft at all.
In the end, it’s about personal preference; some witches embrace astrology deeply, while others don’t use it at all.
What is An Astrology Witch?
I often talk about labels, categories, and “identities” when it comes to witchcraft and the different types of witches one might identify as. There’s some debate within the community about whether it’s beneficial to break down these types, or indeed to apply labels at all.
Personally, I find it extremely useful to think about the different types of witches and witchcraft in broad categories, then there can be related, connected, and sub-types of witches within those.
But the bottom line is that this all depends on how you like to self-identify.
Astrology Witches are, Essentially, Cosmic Witches
So, speaking with the idea of broad categories in mind, an Astrology Witch is a more specialized type of Cosmic Witch, focusing almost exclusively on astrology.
This means they deeply study natal charts, planetary influences, transits, and astrological timing (like electional astrology for spellwork), but with a much deeper focus on the Zodiac and the varying frameworks within the discipline of astrology than even a Celestial Witch might focus on.
As such, an Astrology Witch lives, breathes, and dreams everything astrology!
Their magic is woven through zodiac correspondences, planetary days and hours, and the specific energy of celestial bodies in astrological contexts.
So, while you could say all Astrology Witches fall under the Cosmic Witch umbrella, not all Cosmic Witches are focused primarily on astrology.
Is Astrology a Type of Magic?
So, is astrology a type of magic? Opinions are mixed.
On one hand, astrology has deep roots in Western esotericism, influencing magical traditions like Hermeticism and Wiccan witchcraft. It’s often linked to the occult, meaning “hidden knowledge,” since it interprets unseen cosmic forces shaping human lives.
Ancient astrologers even saw it as a divine science, believing complete mastery of astrology could reveal all fated events in the universe.
On the other hand, some argue astrology is not magic but a belief system, like a tool for understanding cosmic patterns (much like tarot or numerology). It doesn’t inherently involve spellcasting or ritual work, though many witches use it for timing spells and symbolic meaning.
Critics of this view say that dismissing astrology as “not witchcraft” is gatekeeping. After all, witchcraft is personal, and each practitioner decides how astrology fits into their craft.
Ultimately, whether astrology is magic depends on how you use it. For some, it’s a mystical force; for others, it’s just a guide.
What Does an Astrology Witch Actually Do?
Astrology witches practice astrology in many forms, from reading birth charts to tracking planetary transits. Beyond that, they weave astrology into their craft in unique ways.
Whether it’s timing spells with the planetary movements, or creating rituals based on celestial events, astrology witches blend cosmic wisdom with magic in a way that suits their personal practice.
Let’s take a look at some of the easy practices an Astrology Witch might do.
1. Timing Spells with Planetary Movements
An astrology witch pays close attention to the timing of their spells, incorporating elements of lunar witchcraft by aligning them with planetary transits and lunar phases for maximum effectiveness.
For example, love spells might be performed during Venus transits or the waxing moon to attract love and harmony. Or, protection spells could be timed during a Mars transit or the full moon to boost strength and shield against negative energy.
2. Working with Astrological Correspondences
Astrology Witches often use astrological correspondences to infuse their magic with the energies of the planets, signs, and houses.
Each zodiac sign and planet is associated with certain themes. For instance, Mars is linked to action, courage, and protection, so it could be used in spells for warrior energy or boundary setting, while Jupiter, the planet of expansion, is used for abundance, luck, and growth.
3. Creating Astrology-Based Rituals
An astrology witch may craft rituals tailored to specific astrological events, such as:
Eclipses, which represent powerful moments of change, could be used for transformation or letting go of old patterns.
Full Moons amplify power and completion, so rituals might be designed around manifestation or psychic witchcraft. Mercury Retrograde is often viewed as a time to reflect, revisit past projects, or focus on healing rather than initiating new ventures.
4. Reading Astrological Charts for Guidance
Astrology Witches often use astrological charts to guide their personal and magical growth.
Natal charts provide insights into personality, strengths, weaknesses, and life purpose, helping the witch understand themselves better and align their magic accordingly.
Horary astrology answers specific questions based on the moment the question is asked, helping to provide clarity in uncertain situations. Electional astrology helps determine the best times for certain activities, such as business ventures, relationships, or personal projects.
5. Incorporating Astrology into Spiritual Growth
An astrology witch may also use esoteric astrology to explore their soul’s deeper journey, which we’ll take a closer look at in a moment.
But explained very basically, this could involve things like looking at North Node placements to understand the soul’s purpose and the spiritual lessons to be learned in this lifetime, or transits and progressions that show how planetary influences are guiding spiritual evolution over time.
There Are Many Types of Astrology
Now we’ve touched on some of the focuses, practices, and concepts an Astrology Witch’s practice might include, it’s important to take a closer look at the different types of astrology that can influence this genre of craft.
As it turns out, astrology isn’t a one-size-fits-all concept. There are many branches, each with its own focus and method of interpreting celestial influence.
Some Astrology Witches might specialize in one type, like electional astrology for timing spells, while others may use a mix, blending natal astrology for self-discovery or horary astrology for quick answers.
Understanding these different branches helps practitioners tailor their craft to their needs.
Common Types of Astrology
Many astrology witches mix and match different types of astrology, such as using natal astrology for self-discovery, electional astrology for spell timing, and synastry for relationships.
Astrology is a flexible tool, and how you use it depends on your personal practice and beliefs.
- Exoteric Astrology: The practical side of astrology, focusing on personality, events, and predictions for daily life, like career, relationships, and timing important events.
- Natal Astrology: Analyzes birth charts to reveal personality, life path, and potential.
- Horary Astrology: Answers specific questions by examining planetary positions at the time of asking.
- Electional Astrology: Finds the most auspicious times for events like weddings, spells, or business launches.
- Medical Astrology: Connects planetary placements to health conditions (especially in Vedic astrology).
- Relationship Astrology (Synastry): Examines compatibility between people based on their birth charts.
- Financial Astrology: Studies planetary cycles to predict market trends and economic shifts.
- Psychological Astrology: Merges astrology with psychology to explore the mind and emotional patterns.
- Locational Astrology: Determines ideal places to live or work based on astrological influences.
- Mundane Astrology: Predicts world events, politics, and societal trends.
- Esoteric Astrology: Focuses on spiritual evolution and mystical interpretations of planetary energy.
Astrology Traditions
There are also different traditions within astrology. Some Astrology Witches commit to one tradition, such as Vedic astrology, using its principles to guide their magic and spiritual practice. Others blend multiple systems, drawing from Western, Vedic, and Chinese astrology to create a more personalized approach.
Many witches focus on practical application rather than strict tradition, using whatever methods best align with their intuition, spellwork, and belief system. Ultimately, astrology witchcraft is highly individual, shaped by the witch’s unique connection to the stars.
- Western Astrology: Uses the tropical zodiac and planetary positions at birth.
- Vedic Astrology (Jyotish): An Indian system using the sidereal zodiac and constellations.
- Chinese Astrology: Based on the lunar calendar and the 12-year zodiac cycle.
- Uranian Astrology: Uses midpoints between planets to predict necessary life actions.
Astrology Witches may choose one or blend multiple systems to enhance their magic, using celestial wisdom to guide their spells, rituals, and personal growth.
Esoteric vs Exoteric Astrology
Astrology Witches may practice both esoteric and exoteric astrology, but the former seems to align more naturally with witchcraft. This is because it focuses on spiritual growth, soul evolution, and deeper cosmic mysteries (things many witches already incorporate into their practice).
An astrology witch using esoteric astrology might work with past life karma, planetary energies in spellwork, or astrological correspondences for shadow work and transformation.
On the other hand, exoteric astrology is more about practical, day-to-day guidance, which aligns more with traditional astrologers who interpret charts for personality insights, career decisions, and event planning.
That said, some astrology witches also use exoteric astrology, such as timing spells with electional astrology or checking transits for energetic shifts.
In short, an esoteric focus tends to blend more seamlessly with witchcraft, but an astrology witch can work with either, or both! It all depends on their personal approach. Here’s a quick and easy breakdown:
Exoteric Astrology (Outer, Traditional)
- The astrology most people are familiar with (birth charts, horoscopes, zodiac signs).
- Focuses on how planets and signs affect your personality, life events, relationships, and career.
- Used for practical guidance—e.g., “Mercury is retrograde, so expect communication delays!”
- Looks at the material world and how astrology affects your everyday life.
Esoteric Astrology (Inner, Spiritual)
- A more spiritual, soul-centered approach to astrology.
- Focuses on your soul’s evolution and higher purpose rather than day-to-day life.
- Interprets planets and signs as symbols of spiritual lessons and karmic growth.
- Often linked to concepts like reincarnation, chakras, energy work, and cosmic consciousness.
So, in closing, an Astrology Witch could work with either or both.
If they focus on spells for love, money, or personal success, they’re using Exoteric Astrology (practical magic). If they use astrology to connect with past lives, spirit guides, or cosmic energy, they’re tapping into Esoteric Astrology (more “spiritual” magic).
Are You an Astrology Witch?
Ultimately, the practice of an Astrology Witch is deeply personal and often unique to the individual. While one witch may focus more on horoscopes and daily transits for quick guidance, another may immerse themselves in complex esoteric astrology to explore past lives or spiritual growth.
The beauty of astrology within witchcraft is that it can be as practical or mystical as the witch desires.
In essence, an astrology witch uses the cosmic rhythms of the universe to enhance their magical work, align their intentions with celestial energies, and deepen their spiritual connection to the stars.
